Thank You In Advance

How do you train a male rat to come to his name? (his name:Timpleton)?
I agree with the two previous answers. I've done it with all 4 rats that i have now, and they learn pretty quickly. my rats go wild over corn puffs, so if you use his favourite treat, he'll associate a lot quicker. Also try the calling game, where he is a few metres away playing happily by himself, then try calling his name in a song-song voice and you'll notice that you'll get his attention very quickly.

Atilla has it all wrong. Rats DO learn their names, and can recognise them. Just like a cat or dog. They're a lot smarter than some people give them credit for :P

Good luck! :-)
Reply:It takes a while for a rat to learn the name, and to bond with you enough to come to you when you call him.

They won't obey all the time though, as they're easily distracted.

Templeton is a cute name, by the way, very common for male rats.

My rats tend to respond to me, after a couple months of interaction. Make sure you say his name a lot, to get him used to it.
Reply:Say his name a lot so he gets used to it. Also, try calling his name and holding out a treat (e.g. almond). If all goes well, Timpleton will start associating his name with a treat, and will come when you call him.
Reply:He probably won't learn his name. if you choose a specific noise to use or tone to say it in he is much more likely to respond. Unfortunately this will probably be synonymous with "treat" because I think that is really the only way to train them.

What I do is click to get them to come to me for a treat or when I walk in the room. It definitely works. My free-range ratties also recognized all other sounds having to with food including bags crinkling, dishes clinking and chewing. In no time they would be in my lap and digging around to see what I'd got!
